vital beat; for the love of music & movement
Mission Statement:
We are a studio that prides itself on providing a fun, accessible, unintimidating yoga practice to new & seasoned clients. We recognise that people come to yoga & pilates for a great variety of reasons; psychological, physical, or spiritual and all of these reasons are as valid as any other. We believe that the core essence of movement is joy, and one of the fastest ways to get there, is through music. Our teachers are warm & friendly, our spaces are beautiful and thoughtfully designed, and we are a studio free from ego or competition. Our studio is free from hierarchy and we don’t subscribe to lineage, our teachers are students of the practice, just like you.
We believe in equality and social equity, and strive for inclusivity in our studios.
Vital Beat is a modern vinyasa & pilates business that melds the ancient traditions of yogic philosophy with contemporary style to create a yoga practice that is inclusive, playful, and responsive to modern bodies & lifestyles. We pull together the minds and experience of our yoga teachers, drawing on their unique passions and styles to create a heart-centred yoga practice centred held within a container of community. Vital Beat’s home studio is Midland, with a sister studio located in Edgewater (Joondalup) as well as an online, on-demand video offering.
Vital Beat is playful, authentic, and music driven, amalgamating the very best of yogic lineages that is receptive to busy western bodies & individual needs, as well as the physical and mental wellbeing of the students we teach. We assign modern functional philosophy to yoga practice, to create classes centred around holistic movement, self- awareness & a love of music, honouring unique bodies, and how we move through and interact with, the world. We even share our playlists with our community with our studio Spotify account!
Expect modern music in our classes, from Hip Hop to Jazz, Soul to RnB, and Acoustic to Pop, music that moves you, excites you, and grounds you. Music is at the forefront of everything we do – a booty wiggle in downdog is even encouraged! We serve everyone who has a body to move, offering dynamic vinyasa classes to make you sweat, soothing Slow Flow, deep stretch and deeply mindful Yin Yoga, Pregnancy yoga, Bubs & Me yoga, Kids yoga and Tween Yoga for adolescents, and Reformer Pilates. Vital Beat also runs an annual Yoga Teacher Training, as well as workshops, and yoga retreats.
We also offer a FREE creche service, Yoga Scholarships for those in our community who can’t afford yoga, and a BIPOC Diversity Scholarship for our Teacher Training. Vital Beat also stocks yoga related retail products including their own branded clothing range.
Within the Midland premises we also have three practitioner rooms that we lease to four businesses aligned with our ethos, including Evermore Artistry (lashes, brows, and makeup), Helen Hart (Reiki & Hypnotherapy), Nat McGrath (Naturopathy), and Amy Randall (Remedial Massage & Energy Work).
In December 2020 we began renovations to build a Pilates Reformer room in the rear of our Midland premises, to complement the yoga & wellness business with the view of launching a Hip Hop Reformer (music-driven reformer) studio. The equipment for this new room and expansion of my business is due to arrive late January 2021 to much excitement from our community!
The studio is tailored towards beginners and those with little experience of yoga or pilates, its playfulness and musicality creates a safe and welcoming space for those who may be intimidated by a more austere, traditional practice.
Vital Beat also has long standing relationships with several brands and charities including;
Lululemon (owner Kaye Waterhouse is a West Australian Ambassador)
Cat Haven (bi-annual kitten-yoga classes to raise much needed funds) and
MSWA (with an annual hip hop yoga event in the city to raise funds for neuro disease research)
Vital Beat started as a small 112 sqm studio in Midland in winter 2016. It’s rapid growth led to opening a second 155sqm studio in Edgewater in early 2018. In December 2019 the Midland studio relocated to a 300sqm space on Helena Street (the former Curves Gym) and expanded to also include a Pilates room, creche facility, and three wellness rooms leased out to practitioners. These practitioners work in the areas of massage, beauty, reiki/energy work, hypnotherapy, and naturopathy, creating a truly multidisciplinary space.
The studios are owned by the Waterhouse & Jenkins Family Trust, the trustees being husband & wife duo Kaye Waterhouse & Jimmy Jenkins – with 100% of business operations being managed by Kaye. Kaye has built the studio brand offering & identity from the ground up with no prior business experience nor tertiary qualifications, but bucketloads of passion and heart.
